With graduation right around the corner, you may be wondering how to sum up the last four years of your life in a meaningful way. Luckily for you, musicians have been singing odes to growing up and moving on for quite some time. Today we are running down some of the most quintessential graduation songs to include on your playlist as you prepare to walk across that stage.
- Vitamin C- Graduation
With one of the most popular graduation songs of all time, Vitamin C delivers a poignant reflection of the past while looking forward to an uncertain future. She captures what it means to remember all of the good times and wonder what comes next in life.
The perfect lines: “I keep thinking times will never change/ Keep on thinking things will always be the same/ But when we leave this year, we won’t be coming back”
- Green Day- Good Riddance
Green Day’s mellow tune asks you to understand that time moves on, whether for good or for worse. Just remember that as you continue forward, you do it with great passion.
The perfect lines: “For what it’s worth, it was worth all the while/ It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right/ I hope you had the time of your life”
- Nicki Minaj feat. Drake- Moment 4 Life (clean version)
Up until this point, most people have put great emphasis on your graduation day; you have probably put a lot on this day yourself. Nicki Minaj speaks to when that dream comes true. Despite one chapter of your life closing, the next one is opening.
The perfect lines: “This is my moment, I waited all my life I can tell its time/ Drifting away I’m one with the sunsets, I have become alive”
- Kelly Clarkson- Breakaway
Simply put, take chances. Kelly Clarkson knows the changes you are making in your life may seem difficult but take the risk while remembering where you come from.
The perfect lines: “I’ll spread my wings, and I’ll learn how to fly/ Though it’s not easy to tell you goodbye/ I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change/ And breakaway”
- Lee Ann Womack- I Hope You Dance
Another song about taking chances, Lee Ann Womack wants you to face all that life has to offer in awe. As you walk across the graduation stage, remember to always seek out what will challenge you and never limit yourself based on your fears.
The perfect lines: “I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance/ Never settle for the path of least resistance/ Livin’ might mean takin’ chances, but they’re worth takin’”
- Miley Cyrus- The Climb
As a graduate, you should be looking forward to the future. Miley Cyrus tells you to do just that: remember your goals but don’t forget all that it took to get there. It may not seem like it now, but high school has propelled you forward for your success.
The perfect lines: “Ain’t about how fast I get there/ Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side/ It’s the climb”
- First Aid Kit- Ghost Town
There are some things in life you just have to do before you can feel complete. First Aid Kit sings this melancholy tune telling you to go out on your path but remember to come back to those that you love. When graduation is over, you may be leaving your town and are not sure when you will be back. As you depart from friends and family, remember to come back when you can.
The perfect lines: “And I found myself attached/ To this railroad track/ But I’ll come back to you someday”
- Coldplay- Up&Up
Graduation is about looking ahead to the next chapter of your life. Coldplay’s song states that while it is not always easy, never give up.
The perfect lines: “And you can say what is or fight for it/ Close your mind or take a risk/ You can say it’s mine and clench your fist/ Or see each sunrise as a gift”
- Faith Hill- There You’ll Be
Faith Hill’s touching tribute can apply to whatever helped you get through the last four years: your parents, friends, or even your high school itself. As people have lifted you up in life, remember to do so for others.
The perfect lines: “Well you showed me how it feels/ To feel the sky within my reach/ And I always will remember all the strength you gave to me”
- Queen- We are the Champions
You made it through the last four years. Queen wants you to know that it doesn’t hurt to feel like a winner. Keep that attitude in mind as you continue through college and your careers.
The perfect lines: “We are the champions, my friends/ And we’ll keep on fighting till the end”
